Belotero is the most recently FDA-approved hyaluronic acid filler available in the US. Approved in November 2011 for the treatment of nasolabial folds (parenthesis lines around the nose and mouth), Belotero is a flexible dermal filler with several important advantages.
Hyaluronic acid is a popular ingredient for dermal fillers because it is a naturally-occurring compound found in our eyes, joints, and skin, although it diminishes as we age.
The most important difference about Belotero is its smooth texture. Juvéderm has long promoted itself based on its smooth texture, compared to the granular texture of Restylane, but Belotero is even smoother. This makes it our filler of choice for use in lip augmentation, where the thin skin of the lips makes it important to have the smoothest-looking filler possible for natural-looking results.
Belotero’s smooth texture can also make it easier to get a smooth blend between treated and untreated areas, creating a more natural and subtler appearance.
Belotero’s results last about as long as those for other hyaluronic acid fillers. All hyaluronic acid fillers are naturally absorbed by the body, but they maintain their volume by attracting and binding water. About 2/3 of people receiving Belotero saw results lasting about 9 months, but depending on the treatment area and your body’s response, you may see shorter or longer results. Most people get retreatment about every 6-12 months to maintain the quality of results they desire.
Treatment is quick, about 20 minutes, and side effects are relatively minor, mostly localized swelling, redness, and discomfort at the injection site. This typically fades within a couple days, and may be less for Belotero than for other hyaluronic acid fillers because of its smooth texture.
