Carla Marie, one of the anchors of the popular New York City satellite radio station, Z100, is working with Dr. Bruce Katz of JUVA Skin & Laser Center to have a tattoo removed.
Using the PicoSure by Cynosure laser, Dr. Katz will be removing Carla Marie's tattoo over the course of a few sessions.
How Does Laser Tattoo Removal Work?
Tattoos are etched into the deeper layer of skin, the dermis, which isn't something you can simply slough off like the outer layers of skin. In order to remove tattoo ink from the deep layers of skin, the cells that have the ink in them must be removed.
Tattoo removal is done by shining the PicoSure laser into the cells that have ink in them. After numbing the area, the inked cells absorb the light from the laser, heat up, and eventually die. This releases the ink, which is simply removed from your body naturally.
There are several benefits of the PicoSure laser, including:
- Fewer treatments needed than other laser tattoo removal options
- No harm to the surrounding tissues
Laser tattoo removal can't be done in one treatment without scarring, therefore, Dr Katz will evaluate your skin and your tattoo to determine how many treatments you may need. The factors in determining how many treatments you may need include the following:
- The number of colors in your tattoo
- If the ink was densely applied when you got your tattoo
- The contrast of your tattoo with your skin
