Having a double-chin is something that millions of Americans struggle with, but may be becoming something that's easier to be free of. A double-chin is typically caused by an excessive amount of fat under the chin, known as submental fat.
The usual treatment to rid a person of a double-chin is to perform a facelift. In a facelift procedure, the chin fat is not actually removed, but the skin is tightened and lifted to give a tighter and more youthful appearance. However, the chin fat will remain and could eventually sag again.
Thankfully, our Manhattan dermatologist, Dr. Bruce Katz, is always looking for cutting-edge technology and treatments in order to offer our patients the best possible options. A new treatment option has been proven to be very effective at getting rid of submental fat: Kybella.
Kybella is an injectable treatment that is FDA-approved for use under the chin. Kybella (deoxycholic acid) injections destroy the cell membranes of fat cells so, when injected into the chin's fat cells, the cells effectively die. After cell death, your body can naturally rid itself of the fat and you'll notice your chin will look thinner and you'll look younger.
Kybella is administered in a series of small injections and can be done in as many as six visits, each one month apart. Following your treatments, you may notice some swelling or redness at the injection site, but, eventually you will notice that your chin looks youthful and taut.
