In the past, breast implant manufacturers and plastic surgeons used to suggest that patients consider replacing their silicone breast implants after 10 years. However, today's highly cohesive gel implants (also called form-stable or "gummy bear" implants) are so durable that manufacturers and surgeons alike have stopped recommending elective replacement every decade. If the shell ruptures, the gel is designed to retain its shape, preventing a leak.
The truth is, breast implants do not come with an expiration date. They should only be replaced if:
- A rupture occurs
- You want a different size, or are otherwise dissatisfied with their appearance
- Capsular contracture occurs
If you have saline breast implants, there is no reason to replace them unless they develop a leak. When this occurs, the implant itself will deflate, and your body will harmlessly absorb the saline. Many women do choose to replace saline implants with silicone implants as they look and feel more natural.
The most common reason breast implants are replaced is because of a cosmetic concern. You may decide you want smaller or larger implants in the future. Or, if you have had breast implants for many years already, you may want to replace them because they no longer look as good as they did when they were first placed. Generally speaking, the average lifespan of a breast implant is 11 to 15 years.
