Spider veins are one of the most common cosmetic complaints among women. These small red or purple veins can form anywhere on the legs, from your ankle to the top of your thigh. They are caused when the blood in certain veins gets “backed up” instead of being carried back to the heart. The stagnant blood in these veins grows darker, making the veins more visible. Although spider veins do not pose any health risks, they can cause discomfort for some patients, and their unsightly appearance makes many women self-conscious, driving them to conceal their legs.
Thankfully, there is a simple treatment that can be used to eliminate or reduce the appearance of unwanted spider veins: sclerotherapy. This procedure involves injecting a small amount of a new FDA-approved solution called Asclera® directly into the spider vein. Asclera® displaces the blood, causing the vein to blanch and fade. The vessel wall then swells shut to stop the blood from re-entering the vein.
Depending on the size, quantity, and nature of the veins you want to have treated, you may require multiple injections for the best results. After vein treatment, you can expect your veins to continue disappearing for up to two months after the injections.
