Getting a facelift can seem like an intimidating process, but it doesn’t have to be. During your consultation, our plastic surgeon will examine your skin quality and texture, and discuss your cosmetic goals to help you decide on the best approach to treatment. Depending on the extent of your facelift – and whether or not it is combined with other procedures, such as a brow lift or eyelid surgery – what you can expect from the process will differ.
In a basic facelift, incisions are made in the area where the skin of your temples meets your hairline. Your hair, and the crease behind your ear, will hide the majority of your facelift scars. Our plastic surgeon will gently lift, reposition, and tighten your facial skin, smoothing out its contours and removing excess skin and fat. The entire process typically takes from two to four hours, and is performed with a combination of mild sedatives, local anesthesia, and a mild intravenous anesthesia to ensure you remain comfortable.
After your facelift, you will be provided with medication to help control lingering discomfort. You can expect some amount of swelling and bruising, but these side effects will resolve on their own over time. Recovery from facelift surgery usually takes 2 to 3 weeks, although many patients are able to go back to work after only 2 weeks. Once your scars have healed, they are usually not noticeable. If you feel overly conscious about them, you should be able to easily disguise them using makeup.
