Since every rhinoplasty is unique, the recovery process will be different for each patient. After carefully examining your nose structure and discussing your cosmetic goals, our experienced New York City rhinoplasty surgeon will explain what you can expect from rhinoplasty in more detail, and how long recovery might take based on the extent of your procedure.
In general, you will need to take around a week off of work or school (minimum four to five days) to allow for proper healing. Some patients feel well enough to return to their daily chores after about three days, but bruising and swelling will still be visibly obvious for about ten days to two weeks after your procedure. You will need to wear a nose splint for about a week, and you should refrain from blowing your nose for about four weeks after your surgery to prevent bleeding.
Reduction in swelling usually follows the following pattern:
- 2 weeks after procedure - 80% gone
- 6 weeks after procedure - 90% gone (tip swelling usually still present)
- 12 months after the procedure - 100% gone (the remaining 10% takes awhile to fully subside)
Apart from swelling and bruising, pain after rhinoplasty surgery is usually not significant. We can provide you with medication to control any lingering discomfort if necessary. Cold compresses can also relieve discomfort and reduce swelling during the first 48 hours after surgery.
