If your earlobes have been torn or stretched due to an injury or long-term use of heavy earrings, you may be a candidate for earlobe repair. This procedure can reduce the size of earlobes that have been stretched from years of wearing heavy jewelry, or it can repair earlobes that have been torn or split.
If you are interested in learning more about earlobe repair, call us today at (212) 688-5882 to schedule an initial consultation with our board-certified Dermatologic Surgeon.
There are many different reasons you might consider earlobe repair. Some of the specific earlobe problems that require surgical repair include:
Earlobe repair is performed in our office under local anesthesia. Our surgeon will work with you to decide which technique is most appropriate to provide the most natural and symmetrical results.
Sutures are usually removed after five days. In most cases, ears can be re-pierced three months after surgery.
We can perform re-piercing for you at an additional charge.
Sutures are typically removed around 2 weeks following earlobe repair. The earlobe can be re-pierced once the area has fully healed, which we recommend waiting at least 3 months.
Most split earlobes will not repair themselves. Once the earlobe tears, the damaged lobe will form scar tissue around itself. This will further exacerbate the damage and the split will continue unless it is successfully repaired.
Post-surgery, it is advised that you don’t sleep on your ears or place any pressure on the repaired area. This regimen most be followed until the sutures are removed after about one week following your earlobe repair. You can resume other normal activity as soon as after your earlobe is repaired.
Earlobe repair is considered a minor surgery, therefore there is very little discomfort or downtime after. You can temper any associated earlobe repair pain with the use of an over-the-counter pain reliever.
Gauged holes, regardless of size, can be repaired. While a standard earlobe tear repair takes about 10 minutes per ear, gauged earlobes require approximately 20 minutes each.
