If you’re interested in getting a youthful lift to your face without undergoing a surgical procedure, a threadlift offers an alternative to facelift surgery: the non-surgical facelift. This treatment involves the use of dissolvable PDO sutures to provide instant skin tightening and lifting — with no downtime.
A threadlift involves using sutures made from absorbable, non-toxic material to provide a gentle lift to the skin through strategically placed threads, looped just under the surface. These threads, when tightened, give instant lift to the treatment area. This is why it is often referred to as a “non-surgical facelift”. Because there are no incisions, there are no scars. Results from a threadlift can last for 1 to 2 years before needing to be touched up.
The threads used in a threadlift are made of an absorbable material that will dissolve in the body in 4 to 6 months. This is the same material that is used for cardiothoracic surgery. It’s one of the safest materials to be placed inside of the body. Dissolvable threads work on two fronts: first, by providing the physical mechanism for lifting the skin; and secondly by stimulating natural collagen production. Collagen helps thicken and plump the skin, helping reduce wrinkles, fine lines, and other imperfections.
If you’re interested in a non-surgical facelift, a threadlift may be the perfect option for you. The best way to learn if you are a good candidate for this procedure is to schedule a consultation at one of our NYC locations. During this visit, we will assess your skin, review all of your options, and help you determine if threading or another skin tightening service would be best for your needs.
In general, the best candidates for this procedure are individuals who:
At JUVA Skin & Laser Center in NYC, we offer three options for facial threadlifts to help us meet the unique needs of each patient. Loose skin of the jowls, face, and neck can be addressed.
Silhouette InstaLift™ provides immediate results to the mid-face and neck areas while stimulating both Type I and Type III collagen for long-lasting results. InstaLift threads are made from a safe and non-toxic material that naturally breaks down over time. At the tip of each of these threads is a bi-directional cone, giving our experienced specialists more control over creating ideal facial contours and symmetry. Silhouette InstaLift is approved for the treatment of the mid-face, and is an excellent option for lifting and filling out the cheek area, as well as tightening loose neck skin.
NovaThreads are slightly thicker and have tiny barbs that allow for optimal skin lifting. Nova Thread sutures are fully absorbed by the skin within 4 to 6 months, but results can last for 12 months or more due to the collagen production stimulated by this facial threading option. Nova Threads can be used to treat skin laxity in the jaw, cheeks, and underneath the eyes, as well as wrinkles and depressions throughout the face. A recent innovation is to use them as fillers in the laugh lines, marionette lines, and lips.
Like Nova Threads, EuroThreads are pre-threaded into a needle or cannula, allowing for greater ease of insertion. Utilizing threads made of polydioxanone, EuroThreads may be smooth, twisted, or barbed depending on the needs of the patient. These threads are inserted in a web-like pattern to provide optimal support for underlying skin as collagen and elastin are stimulated for long-lasting results. EuroThreads can be used throughout the body to give lift to areas including the breasts, buttocks, and face.
A threadlift is not a good fit for patients who have known allergic reactions to foreign substances in the body. Men and women who are prone towards keloid scars and/or excessive bleeding should avoid threading services as well. Those with thin or very sensitive skin may also wish to avoid threading, because thinner skin can allow threads to be visible, which can impact results for several months. Side effects of threading are rare, but not impossible. Before your treatment, we will review your medical history to make sure you are not at heightened risk for complications. Regarding side effects, swelling, bruising, and slight discomfort are all possible, as are asymmetrical results, skin banding, divots, or dips in the treatment area. Skin imperfections most often self-correct within a few weeks.
Before treatment, your skin will be marked for insertion and guidance of the threads. Threading is performed with the patient awake, but under a local anesthetic. While you may feel some pressure as threads are inserted, there should not be any pain. Multiple sutures can be inserted through the same point in the skin.
The dissolvable threads are connected to a thin, long cannula, which will be pushed through the tissue beneath the skin. When the thread gets to the end point, the thread will be released and the cannula will be removed. This process will be repeated until the desired lift has been achieved, with as many 1 to 15 threads inserted, depending on the treatment area. After the tightening is complete, the extra ends of the threads are clipped off. The threads will then be massaged to make sure that the tissue is smooth.
In most cases, swelling and discomfort will be minimal and temporary. Under most circumstances, threadlift patients will be able to resume normal activities within 24 hours. You may be asked to sleep face-up for a couple of weeks.
Exercise can usually be resumed within two weeks. At that point, recovery should be complete, and you should be able to return to life as normal. Taking time to rest and allowing your body to heal will shorten your recovery time. The more you push yourself, the longer your healing response may take.
It is also very important for you to carefully follow the post-care instructions we will give you. Following your procedure, you can further reduce risks for discomfort by doing the following:
It’s very important for those undergoing a non-surgical face lift with threading to be aware that no lifting procedure can deliver permanent results. A threadlift will typically last from 1 to 3 years, and because it’s such a low-risk procedure, patients who are happy with the results of their threadlift can usually have new threads placed once their old ones are absorbed.
A threadlift is less expensive than many surgical procedures, but paying out of pocket is not always attractive to our patients. We are pleased to offer a range of financing options for threading and other cosmetic services that can help make these procedures affordable for those who would rather not put a service on their credit card or pay up-front with cash.
During your initial consultation, our patient coordinator can provide you with information about financial companies with whom we work. Promotional financing and special rates are available through Prosper and CareCredit, both of which can be used to cover the cost of your threading procedure. Applications for these services can be found on their websites or given in person when you visit our office.

Nova Threads are absorbable surgical sutures that are made from a biocompatible material called polydioxanone, which has been specially designed for safe re-absorption by the body. They are used to achieve a “non-surgical face lift”.
The ideal treatment areas for Nova Threads are the neck and jaw. It’s also effective at reducing wrinkles and lifting of tissue in the lower face. In addition, Nova Threads are great at restoring the healthy “V shape” of youth. The threads provide overall structure to lift and support tissues, which ultimately stimulates collagen growth for natural-looking results. This is why a threadlift is often referred to as a non-surgical face lift.
Nova Threads have both been approved by the FDA for the purpose of lifting facial tissue, and they produce excellent results. There’s no surgery, no incisions, and no scarring.
Having Nova Threads placed is relatively fast and convenient. This entire process usually takes about 30 to 45 minutes.
Local anesthesia will be used to numb the area(s) that are going to be treated, then a small instrument (a narrow cannula or needle) will be used to insert the threads below the skin. Because you’ll be numb, you will not feel anything except for slight pressure.
Results from a threadlift are immediate. Nova Threads remain in place for about 4 to 6 months, after which point they slowly dissolve and are fully absorbed by the body. Patients can expect to keep seeing the results of their Nova Threads for a year or more after their treatment. This long-lasting effect arises from the lingering improvement in skin condition that results from collagen stimulation, leaving you with beautiful healthy, natural-looking results.
